Adopt a Dog from the Šabac Shelter

It’s simpler than you think. Browse the dogs, visit the shelter, and take your new friend home.

How Adoption Works

Four simple steps – from first visit to your new family member.

1. Browse & Visit

Meet the dogs – online or in person.

Start by browsing the dog profiles on this website. Each profile is written by volunteers who know the dog personally – you’ll get honest information about personality, size, and compatibility.

Then come visit the shelter at Zeke Buljubaše bb, Šabac. The volunteers are there every day and happy to introduce you to the dogs. You can also meet them at our „Pet Happenings“ in Veliki Park – relaxed outdoor events where dogs and potential adopters spend time together.

2. Get to Know Each Other

Spend time with the dog before deciding.

Found a dog you connect with? Come back for another visit. Walk together. See how the dog reacts to your family, your other pets, your energy. The volunteers can tell you everything about the dog’s habits, fears, and favourite things.

There’s no pressure to decide quickly. Take the time you need – a good match lasts a lifetime.

3. Adoption Agreement

A simple agreement that protects you and the dog.

When you’re ready, we’ll go through the adoption agreement together. It covers your responsibilities as the new owner and the dog’s medical history. Every dog leaves the shelter vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed or neutered.

The agreement is simple and straightforward – no bureaucratic maze, just clarity for both sides.

4. Welcome Home

Take your new friend home – and start your life together.

The first days may be an adjustment for your dog. New home, new smells, new routines. Give them time and patience. Most shelter dogs settle in beautifully within a few weeks.

The volunteers stay in touch. Have questions about behaviour? Need advice on feeding or settling in? Reach out any time. And if serious problems arise, we’ll help find a solution – your dog will never end up on the street again. That’s our promise.

What Every Dog Gets Before Adoption

Full Medical Care

Vaccinations, microchip, and spaying or neutering. Every dog is health-checked and medically prepared before going to their new home.

Personal Introduction

Volunteers know every dog by name, personality, and history. They’ll help you find the right match – whether you want an active companion or a calm couch buddy.

Ongoing Support

The volunteers stay in touch after adoption. Need advice? Have questions? We’re here. And if things don’t work out, the dog will never end up on the street again.

Pet Happenings in Veliki Park

Not sure about visiting the shelter? Meet the dogs at our public adoption events in Šabac’s main park.

At our „Pet Happenings,“ volunteers bring dogs from the shelter to Veliki Park so families can meet them in a relaxed, outdoor setting. Walk with them, play with them, and see if there’s a connection. 23 dogs found homes through these events in just six weeks. Follow us on Instagram or Facebook for upcoming dates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an adoption fee?

The adoption itself is free. Every dog is vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed or neutered at no cost to you – this is covered by donations to the shelter and Strays e.V. We want to remove every barrier between a dog and a loving home.

Can I visit the shelter any day?

Yes. Volunteers are at the shelter every day. Just come to Zeke Buljubaše bb in Šabac. If you want to make sure someone is there to show you around, contact us in advance via Instagram, Facebook, or email.

Do the dogs get along with cats or children?

Each dog profile includes compatibility information. The volunteers spend time with every dog daily and know their personalities well. If you have specific questions about a dog’s behaviour with children, cats, or other animals, just ask – we’ll give you an honest answer.

I live in a flat. Can I still adopt?

Absolutely. Many of our dogs are perfectly suited to flat living – especially smaller or calmer dogs. What matters most is that the dog gets regular walks, attention, and love. The volunteers can help you find a dog that matches your living situation.

What if it doesn’t work out?

We stay in touch after every adoption. If serious problems arise, we’ll help find a solution. The dog will never end up on the street again – that’s our absolute commitment. In some cases, we can help with behaviour advice or find an alternative home.

Can I adopt from abroad?

Our primary focus is finding homes locally in Serbia. However, if you live abroad and are interested in adopting, contact Strays e.V. – they can help coordinate international adoptions including EU paperwork and transport.

How can I help if I can’t adopt right now?

There are many ways to help: donate, sponsor a dog, volunteer at the shelter, foster a dog temporarily, or simply share our profiles on social media. Every little bit helps these dogs find their way home.

When are the next Pet Happenings?

We announce dates on our Instagram and Facebook pages. The events take place in Veliki Park in Šabac – come meet the dogs in person in a relaxed outdoor setting.
